The Department of Counseling and Human Services ( CSHS ) at East Tennessee State University seeks a student-centered teacher/scholar to join our team as a 9-month Clinical Assistant Professor (convertible) with SUD -specific expertise to build and improve the regional behavioral and healthcare workforce and reduce stigma among this same workforce. The Department would value applicants with lived experience. Teaching responsibilities are in counseling, specifically substance use and addiction counseling. Other responsibilities include independent and collaborative research/scholarly work and service, and affiliation with the Addiction Science Center. This position is one of five new faculty and two clinical fellow hires across four departments focused on addiction and recovery. Primary responsibilities include teaching graduate-level courses in the Counseling Program, with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health and/or School Counseling; practicum and internship supervision; advisement and mentoring of graduate students in Counseling; program/course development; establishing positive relationships with local and regional clinical mental health agencies, professional counselors, and/or school systems; research and/or scholarly activities; and appropriate service to the department, college, university, community, and the profession of Counseling. This position is for a three-year appointment, grant-funded, and may be convertible to tenure-track no later than the end of year three of the appointment. Funding for the position is from the State of Tennessee's Opioid Abatement Council. This position is one of a cohort of faculty and clinical fellows hired across behavioral health professions training programs who will help to grow the SUD workforce and the skill set of the existing healthcare workforce around the region. In addition to support from the Department of Counseling and Human Services, this position will receive significant support for research from the Addiction Science Center. The Addiction Science Center partners with affected communities in Central Appalachia to advance the science of substance misuse prevention and treatment. Department Overview The CSHS department has 17 faculty and 2 support staff. It offers an undergraduate degree in Human Services, graduate degrees in Individual, Family, and Community Sciences and Counseling (with school and clinical mental health concentrations), a graduate certificate in Nature-Based Therapy, and three minors in trauma and resilience, family studies, and human development and learning. The Human Services program is available online and on-ground, while the IFCS program is fully online. Programs are accredited by CSHSE , NCFR , and CACREP . Required Qualifications
Master's in Counseling from a CACREP -accredited program and regionally accredited institution meets ETSU graduate teaching criteria. Demonstrated clinical, teaching, and/or research experience related to substance use and behavioral/process addictions. Demonstrated professional identity as a counselor through sustained memberships in professional and/or school counseling organizations, relevant counseling credentials, and at least two of the following four areas: professional development as a counselor, professional service and advocacy in counseling, ongoing counseling practice, or research and scholarly activity related to counseling. A research agenda for the next three years with a demonstrated potential for excellence. Demonstrated collaborative and team-oriented mindset to work collaboratively across the university. Completed training in clinical supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
An earned doctorate in Counseling or Counselor Education by August 15, 2024, from a CACREP -accredited institution (or ABD considered). Hold a professional school or clinical counseling licensing or license-eligible within one year of hire. Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor ( LADAC ) in state of residence or eligibility for LADAC license in Tennessee. Evidence that the successful candidate can proactively address diversity by creating and maintaining inclusive practices in their syllabi, teaching, supervision, research, and professional practice. Experience and professional practice in a clinical mental health setting, a public/private school setting, or both. Experience working with graduate students in instruction/online learning, mentoring, and training or research activities. Approved Clinical Supervisor credential and/or experience as a clinical supervisor for counseling students and/or residents.
