Engineering Manager, Web Architecture
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the WAVE team — and yes, it's just as cool as it sounds. The Web Architecture & Visual Experience team empowers engineers to rapidly build and deploy consistent, accessible, and high-quality web applications by providing optimised internal tooling, pre-built UI components, and streamlined app bootstrapping. This work is essential for keeping the Bolt brand consistent across product lines and significantly reducing time to market.
About us
With over 200 million customers in 53+ countries, Bolt is one of the fastest-growing tech companies in Europe and Africa. And it's all thanks to our people.
We believe in creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome, regardless of race, colour, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability.
Our ultimate goal is to make cities for people, not cars, and we need your help to achieve this mission
About the role
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of tenured Senior and Staff engineers in designing, building, and scaling Bolt's Web Platform. You'll tackle exciting product and platform challenges — from building a user-centric Design System to developing reusable UI components that empower our 600+ engineers. Your team will work closely with Product Designers and stakeholders across the organisation to ensure brand consistency, improve developer productivity, and reduce time-to-market across all web applications at Bolt. You'll guide the team toward a strategic vision focused on innovation, high engineering standards, and an exceptional developer experience for products used by over 200 million customers and 4.5 million partners in more than 600 cities.
Your daily adventures will include:
- Leading and growing talented and motivated Software Engineers specialising in Web technologies, delivering mission-critical features daily.
- Organising the team's work, finding opportunities to improve processes and collaboration, and ensuring the quality of the team's deliverables.
- Driving the Web architecture, technical excellence, and reliability of the Bolt Design System, which is a central tool for Bolt's centralised and unified user experience. Syncing with stakeholders in other teams to ensure smooth project deliveries.
- Regular 1-1s, coaching, and mentoring Software Engineers to develop skills and uncover their potential.
- Preparing performance reviews, goal setting, training, budget allocation, headcount planning, and active participation in the recruitment process.
- Participating in planning, contributing ideas, and providing constructive feedback to the team's development roadmap.
About you:
- Excellent English and communication skills - both verbal and in writing.
- You're comfortable with modern programming languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Scala, or Java. You have experience with Frontend/Web technologies: React, Figma, Storybook, modern CSS (e.g. CSS Modules, Tailwind), and with design systems or internal UI platforms is a strong plus.
- You bring strong leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to attract, inspire, and retain talent. You have led high-performing engineering teams, especially focused on web or frontend products. You've successfully built or managed internal platforms, libraries, frameworks, tooling, and large-scale projects requiring alignment across multiple teams.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in software development and a deep understanding of how to write readable, testable, maintainable, and performant code.
- Proven ability to get things done, maintain a strong vision for the future, set up and facilitate engineering processes and make data-driven decisions.
- You lead with empathy, supporting individuals to overcome challenges, and balancing independent ownership with effective cross-team collaboration.
Experience is great, but what we really look for is drive, intelligence, and integrity. So even if you don't tick every box, please consider applying if you feel you're the kind of person described above
Why you'll love it here:
- Play a direct role in shaping the security and user experience of one of Europe's leading platforms
- Impact millions of customers and partners in 600+ cities across 53 countries
- Work in fast-moving autonomous teams with some of the smartest people in the world
- Accelerate your professional growth with unique career opportunities
- Get a rewarding salary and stock option package that lets you focus on doing your best work
- Enjoy the flexibility of working in a hybrid mode with a minimum of 2 days in the office each week to foster strong connections and teamwork
- Take care of your physical and mental health with our wellness perks
*Some perks may differ depending on your location and role.
